Summer has arrived and with it comes the threat of severe storms. Each year, the United States averages around 10,000 thunderstorms and each thunderstorm typically produces heavy rain for 30 minutes to an hour. ... All thunderstorms are dangerous because every thunderstorm produces lightening. Each year in the United States, approximately 300 people are struck by lightning. Of those struck, about 30 people are killed and others suffer lifelong disabilities.

With summer knocking at the door and high temperatures already visiting Joint Base Charleston, it is imperative to recognize the potential life-threatening factors associated with heat exhaustion, especially in relation to small children and family pets. The greatest risk for heat stroke/exhaustion for small children and pets results from being left unattended in a hot vehicle. On average, 37 children die in hot cars every year in the United States. Peak occurrences happen between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

On the evening June 5 and the early morning of June 6, 2018, Joint Base Charleston will conduct a real-time historical reenactment of the D-Day invasion, solely on social media. Starting at 7 p.m., both the 437th and 315th Airlift Wings will start Facebook and Twitter posts as if the D-Day invasion is happening in real-time, as it did 74 year ago, through the eyes of their predecessors, the 437th and 315th Troop Carrier Groups.

Approximately 15 C-17 Globemaster III aircraft from the 437th and 315th Airlift Wings provided airdrop support for the U.S. Army’s 509th Infantry Regiment, Fort Polk, Louisiana, May 22 through a large formation exercise. During the flight, the C-17s flew over several prominent landmarks in South Carolina including the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge and the South Carolina State House while performing various training exercises.
