The 315th Airlift Wing will hold its first annual awards gala in downtown Charleston, S.C. to formally recognize its top performers during the June unit training assembly.

The 315th Annual Award Gala will be at the Charleston Marriott Crystal Ballroom. The event kicks off with a social at 6 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Military attire is mess dress/semi formal; civilian attire is tuxedo/business attire for men and evening gown/cocktail dress for women.

“I think this will be a great event,” said Col. Adam Willis, 315 AW commander.  “Our wing members deserve special recognition for their outstanding performance.  This event, which will be dripping with military tradition, will shine a well-deserved spot light on our great Citizen Airmen in front of their family, friends and coworkers.”

Guest speaker for this year’s event will be Sichan Siv, former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N.  He will tell gala attendees about his epic struggle from the Cambodian Killing Fields in the 1970s to becoming President George H. W. Bush’s White House deputy assistant in 1989 and in 2001 President George W. Bush chose Siv to be the U.S. ambassador to the U.N.

“If I had one obsession it was to live in freedom and democracy,” Siv told People Magazine in 1989 interview.

“I think Sichan Siv’s story of perseverance against great odds and going on to accomplishing so much for democracy will truly inspire everyone who hears him speak,” said Willis.

The number of RSVPs was off to a slow start, especially because of the Covid-19 pandemic but the numbers are growing quickly according to the gala planning committee.

“I’m proud of all the tremendous work the wing has done through this extraordinary year. This night is recognition of all that we have accomplished and to celebrate just how valued every Airmen is in this wing,” said Chief Master Sgt. John Burke. "I look forward to spending the evening where we get the ability to honor the team."

Prices for the gala are:  E6 and below - $35, civilians; E7 and above - $45.   Deadline for tickets is May 21. Payment is accepted through Venmo: @awards-gala.  For those wishing to pay cash or check, contact Joann Gillespie in public affairs at (843) 963-2034.
