One of the most wide-reaching and significant changes to military pay and benefits over the last 70 years took effect Jan. 1, 2018, with the implementation of the Uniformed Services Blended Retirement System, known as BRS. Nearly 1.6 million current service members have the option to remain in the current legacy “high-3” retirement system or to choose the BRS. Opt-in eligible service members have a year to make their retirement system election. The open period for the majority of service members is from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2018.

Default Air Force Logo Colonels offered chance to voluntarily serve past 30 years
The Line of the Air Force Colonel Continuation Board will begin in January, allowing eligible members to voluntarily serve an additional three years past the active-duty retirement time of 30 years.

Default Air Force Logo Leader training on Blended Retirement System available via mobile app
The online Blended Retirement System leader course, released in June, is designed to educate leaders on the new retirement system. The training provides both military and civilian leaders of Airmen with a working knowledge of the BRS and the Defense Department plan to educate the force prior to implementation on Jan. 1, 2018.

Blended Retirement System Blended retirement system training now available
Online training designed to educate Airmen about the new Blended Retirement System, the Defense Department system with changes on the current military retirement system, is now available via Joint Knowledge Online course number P-US1330. The course is also available to those without a Common Access Card -- to include family members -- via an alternate website.

Brig. Gen. Randall A. Ogden presents a certificate of retirement to Col. James B. Hurley June 7, 2015 at the Joint Base Charleston theater in Charleston, S.C. During his 33-33-year career, Hurley first served with the active duty Air Force before transitioning to the Air Force Reserve. Hurley donned the Air Force uniform for the last time but will go on to serve in a civilian capacity with the 628th Air Base Wing Mission Support Group at the base.
