Over 100 eighth and ninth-grade girls from 18 Charleston-area schools visited Joint Base Charleston March 24 to learn about jobs in aviation as part of the 8th annual Women in Aviation Career Day. This year during the formal event opening, a special guest shared her story about challenges she faced through her journey to success as a military F-16 Fighting Falcon pilot. Maj. Christina "Thumper" Hopper, from the 71st Flying Training Wing at Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma. "Thumper" was the first African-American female fighter pilot to fly combat missions in a major war - Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Aircrews from the 315th and 437th Airlift Wings took off the morning of May 25, from Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, in 18 C-17 Globemaster IIIs as part of a large formation exercise over Carolina skies. Exercise Bonny Jack was a joint service exercise with about 1,600 paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
