Beat the heat

Summer is here and we know what that means: 100% humidity and black flag conditions before 9 a.m., but we still have a job to do. The 628th Air Base Wing mission statement, "We Enable Readiness," means we never stop working no matter the conditions. We still have to maintain our physical fitness and train in this hot and humid climate. Unfortunately, there are three major forms of heat illnesses which all can be brought on by running or training in these warmer climates. (U.S. Air Force graphic)

Charleston C-17 humanitarian cargo mission over Iraq

This is a still from a U.S. Central Command video of the U.S. military airdrop of food and water on Aug. 7 for thousands of Iraqi citizens threatened by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant near Sinjar, Iraq. This mission was conducted from multiple airbases within the CENTCOM area of responsibility and included one Charleston C-17 and two C-130 aircraft that together dropped a total of 72 bundles of supplies. The C-17 dropped 40 "Container Delivery System" bundles of fresh drinking water and was complemented by a C-130 loaded with an additional 16 bundles totaling 5,300 gallons of fresh drinking water. In addition, one C-130 aircraft dropped 16 bundles totaling 8,000 meals ready to eat. The aircraft were over the drop area for less than fifteen minutes flying at a low altitude. (U.S. CENTCOM image)

Tech Sgt. Al Pempsell and Senior Airman Candice Elvis, 300th Airlift Squadron loadmasters, explain the airlift capabilities of the C-17 Globemaster III as visiting Chaplain Candidates tour the jet and get demonstrations and briefings from the Reserve crew. The Air Force Chaplain Candidate Program allows seminary and other professional religious school students to evaluate their compatibility and potential for commissioning as an Air Force Chaplain. The focus of the chaplain candidate program is on experiencing ministry in the Air Force during a summer tour of active duty. Upon entering the program, individuals are commissioned as a chaplain candidate, in the grade of Second Lieutenant. After graduation and obtaining an ecclesiastical endorsement, candidates are then eligible for reappointment as a chaplain in either, the U.S. Air Force Reserve, the Air National Guard or placed on active duty.
