Two 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron Reservist won Air Force Reserve Command-level awards in the most recent AE awards release announced in September.

AFRC AE winners are:

Outstanding AFRC AE Aircrew Member of the Year: Maj Doug Bisset, flight nurse Outstanding AFRC AE Operations Member of the Year: Capt Sarah Smith, medical services corp officer

Throughout the year the 315 AES participated in several training opportunities that allowed joint training, keeping the teams’ medical skills sharpened.

AE units simulated responses to a myriad of real-world situations from natural disasters to man-made disasters by creating hospital-like treatment centers within a C-17 Globemaster III and providing other medical relief support.

Smith recalled how valuable this year’s missions were to her and her wingmen.

“Missions like Patriot Sands are my favorite,” said Smith. “It allowed us to work with the Coast Guard, Army medics, and Florida International University’s Florida Advanced Surgical Transport team volunteers on several different aircraft.”

The award is based on an array of performances throughout the year. For example, Air Mobility Command hosts a number of events during the year, such as Patriot Sands and Mobility Guardian, bringing together over 40 countries to offer training across many different career fields. Aeromedical evacuation units and personnel are graded on their performance here and in real-world operations.

“The opportunities we received at Mobility Guardian were so unique,” said Bisset. “They prepared us for everything that 2020 has to offer.”

“I would like to extend my congratulations to all of the winners who were chosen for their outstanding achievements in the representation of the 315th Airlift Wing,” said Col. Adam Willis, 315th Airlift Wing commander. “These are very special honors and it gives me great pleasure to recognize them.”
