Rare winter weather freezes Joint Base Charleston

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. --  Joint Base Charleston received over 5 inches of snow and ice in early hours of Jan. 3 bringing the base to a standstill after winter storm Grayson blasted the Charleston area.

Officials postponed the 31th Airlift Wing’s “super” Unit Training Assembly scheduled to take place Jan. 4-7 after many of the local roads remained icy.

Because the Charleston area does not normally get impacted by ice and snow of this magnitude the area struggled to restore roadways. And the jets at the Charleston International Airport was at a standstill along with the C-17 Globemaster IIIs due to lack of snow and ice removal equipment.
Military and civilian flight operations were not able to continue until late Saturday, Jan. 6.

The base resumed its normal operations Monday, Jan. 8 with long lines at the gates after everyone had an extended New Year’s holiday thanks to Grayson.
