Underwood passes 4 CTCS command to Gibson

Lt. Col. Chad Gibson accepted command of the 4th Combat Camera Squadron from Lt. Col. Hamilton Underwood in front of a formation of combat camera members, friends and family here today.

Gibson, a 24 year Air Force Veteran, comes to Charleston from his assignment as deputy director of Air Force Reserve Command Public Affairs.

Underwood, who has been with 4 CTCS since 2000 and has been the unit’s commander since 2014, is moving on to be an Individual Mobilization Augmentee assigned to Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs in Washington, D.C.

As the new squadron commander, Gibson brings a wealth of knowledge to the unit. A few of the highlights of his Air Force career include being a vocalist and comedian with the Air Force Tops in Blue, he was Gen. Tommy Frank’s weather officer in South Korea while with the 2nd Infantry Division, he was an aerial reconnaissance officer with the Air Force “Hurricane Hunters,” and he served as launch weather officer for the space shuttle program at Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Gibson thanked his wife Stephanie for be very supportive as he takes the next step in his career. He added that he was honored to be given the position of commanding “the most respected combat camera squadrons in the Air Force.”

The 4 CTCS is the only Reserve Combat Camera unit in the Air Force. It is responsible for operating, training and equipping forces to acquire and distribute imagery to support Department of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Combat Commanders and Air Force requirements.

Airmen from the 4 CTCS have set foot on every continent, logged thousands of hours on multiple airframes, displayed courage under fire, recorded history in the blink of an eye with every snap of the shutter and bore witness to some of the most defining moments of the 21st century.
