Have an enjoyable, safe holiday

As we get ready to celebrate the holidays with family and friends it's important to reflect on the many blessings we enjoy as Americans. It's also important to keep those who are deployed away from their loved ones in our thoughts and prayers. The 315th Airlift Wing currently has about 160 Airmen deployed throughout the world. Their sacrifices in serving their country are appreciated, especially over the holidays.

As the commander of one of the most accomplished and successful airlift wings in the Air Force, I am very thankful for having such superb Airmen who are dedicated to our wing's success.

I have a couple of requests for each of our wing members. Enjoy the holiday parties, but do not drink and drive--each one of you is vital to the success of our wing. And please use common sense when making road trips. While the temperatures are a little warmer here in Charleston, roads up north may be icy or snow covered. Be prepared. Thoroughly check your vehicle to make sure the tires have proper tread and air pressure, the windshield wipers are in good condition, all external lights and signals are operational, etc. When driving long distances, don't overdo it. Take breaks as necessary to avoid fatigue.

One thing that is of the utmost importance to me, especially during the holidays, is depression. For many it can be the happiest time of the year, but for others, occasionally sadness, depression or worry can overwhelm their thoughts. It is extremely important that you know you are not alone. Each of us has many wingmen who are here to help in times of crisis. Here at the wing, we have an outstanding Airmen and Family Readiness Office. Lisa Sweatt has many resources available to assist you. We alsohave a wonderful Chaplains Office who can be reached after hours at 843-963-2536. Our chaplains or Airmen and Family Readiness Office can also be contacted through our Wing Operations Center at 843-963-2450 or 2451.

In case severe sadness hits you in the middle of the night and you can't get in touch with anyone, the Veterans Crisis Line is always there to talk and help. They can be reached at 1-800-273-8255. Your call is confidential. In extreme situations, they can even connect you with local professionals who can help.

In closing, I'd like to thank the families of our Reservists and civilian employees. Without their support, our Airmen and civilians could not accomplish all the great things they do with the 315th Airlift Wing. Take care, be safe and Happy Holidays!
