Two members from the 315th Airlift Wing Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Joint Base Charleston, S.C. were recently awarded the 2011 4th Air Force Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez Award for their excellence in technological maintenance.

The award, named after Lt. General (Ret.) Leo Marquez, whose career in maintenance and logistics spanned more than two decades, is awarded annually to base-level civilian technicians and airmen who perform hands-on maintenance or manage a maintenance function. The award highlights those who have demonstrated the highest degree of sustained job performance, job knowledge and job efficiency in the categories of aircraft, munitions and missile and communications.

Major Jason B. Dethier, who recently joined the wing in June 2011 as an Air Reserve Technician assigned to the 315 AMXS here, was one of two recipients to receive the award.

When describing what it was like to find out that he had won, Major Dethier said he was both humbled and pleasantly surprised by it since he was the "new kid on the block" and the wing had just aligned under the 4th Air Force.

The second winner, Mr. Scott R. Reu, an electrician work leader and reservist assigned to the 315 AMXS, captured the award for his civilian duties within the squadron.
"I would like to thank everyone in my chain of command for noticing and nominating me for this award," said Reu. "I am very grateful."

Major Dethier and Mr. Reu, both nominated among candidates from 16 competing wings, provided insight as to their thoughts behind the work it takes to be considered and earn the award.

"Do your job the best you can, the rest will come," said Reu advising potential nominees in consideration for the accolade. "If you worry about awards, then you are worrying about the wrong thing."

Major Dethier suggests there is no direct route to success in the Air Force and that individuals should take advantage of every opportunity to learn something new and to do a good job - the recognition will follow.

Both winners will now compete at the MAJCOM level for top honors later this year.
