The first unofficial Thanksgiving holiday dates back to 1621, when colonists celebrated their successful winter harvest with their Native American allies.  It wasn't until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

While servicemembers may not have a winter harvest to tend to, the Thanksgiving holiday is a time for family and loved ones to come together and enjoy one another while feasting on traditional foods such as turkey with gravy, sweet potatoes and homemade apple pie.

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, members of the 315th Airlift Wing share what they are thankful for.

This is what they are thankful for...

Senior Airman Jed M. Pickett with the 315th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron said, "I am thankful for family and the ability to go home for the holidays."

Airman 1st Class Carly D. Dennison with the 315 AES said, "I am thankful for family, my fire crew, my military crew, taking care of my patients and all of my loved ones."

Master Sergeant Thomas J. House with the 701st Airlift Squadron said, "I am thankful for having a healthy family."

Senior Airman Lindsey R. Fleming with the 701 AS said, "I am thankful for spending time with family and food."

Chief Master Sergeant Stephen B. Brunson with the 300th Airlift Squadron said, "I am thankful for living in a country that allows me to serve and for my family and friends."

Lt. Col. Deborah Rieflin with the 315th Operations Support Squadron said, "I am thankful for a great team, good health and happiness."
