Force structure changes discussed at mass briefing Published Aug. 27, 2009 By By Tech. Sgt. Jeff Kelly 315 AW Public Affairs CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- A proposal for the 315th Airlift Wing to reduce the wing's overall manning by 215 part-time reserve positions and eight full-time positions was discussed Sunday during a mass briefing at the Charleston Air Force Base Theater. "This is an introduction for our folks to help inform them of career options as a result of impending manning reductions," said Colonel James Joyce, 315th Airlift Wing maintenance group commander. Representatives from Air Force Reserve Command Headquarters, Robins AFB, Ga., and 315th AW unit commanders informed reservists of the changes to come and answered questions from audience members. Presenters reinforced the notion that although change is imminent, options abound for reservists that might find themselves out of their current position. "First and foremost, AFRC stands firm on the decision to retain qualified combat ready forces," said Craig Branning, chief of bases and units, Robins AFB, Ga. "There are lots of opportunities within the command for people who want to work. We are in transition, but the opportunities are out there for folks who are maybe looking for a change in their job or the type of work they do." While there were a few concerns, most of the feedback received from audience members was positive. "I'm not too scared about it," said Staff Sgt. Austin Roth, 315 AW Aircraft Maintenance Squadron. "It seems like most of the people that will be affected will be less experienced or nearing retirement or people who can't pass their fitness test. I think someone like that might have a little more to worry about." Presenters also reinforced the idea that Charleston was not the only base being affected by manning reductions. "I just want to make sure everyone understands that we are not in this alone," said Col. Steven Chapman, 315th AW commander. "There is a lot of impact throughout the command. We also want to make certain that you have all of the information you need to make an informed decision about your future. Be certain that you don't act on rumors. That is why we want you to get your information from a reputable source."
