On Feb. 27th, the wing kicked off the 2007-2008 Honorary Commanders program with three new community leaders filling the coveted roles as community representative to the 315th Airlift Wing.

The honorary commanders program is part of the wing's community relations program and is designed to increase the understanding of the Air Force Reserve while pairing community leaders with a commander in order to forge relationships that will be mutually beneficial to both the wing and community.

"This program is great for the wing," said Col. Tim Wrighton, commander of the 315th Airlift Wing. "It is an excellent opportunity to reach out to key leaders in the community."

Fred Storey, the new honorary wing commander is the news director for Citadel Broadcasting and WTMA here in Charleston, Chief Greg Mullen, the honorary vice wing commander is the police chief for the city of Charleston and Bill Maher, the wing's honorary command chief master sergeant, is the vice president of operations at Heritage Trust Federal Credit Union.

The three commanders were chosen because of their organization's ongoing involvement with the wing and the Air Force Reserve.

"I am just proud to be selected, especially during this time of war," said Storey about his selection as the honorary wing commander. "Since I have never had the opportunities to serve in the military, this is one of the greatest honors of my life."

The three new commanders will be the honored guests and participate in various wing events through out the year and be a liaison to the greater Charleston community.

In 2008, the program will likely expand to include all three groups as well as the current wing leadership positions.
