  • By Public Affairs
Due to winter weather forecasts, Joint Base Charleston will implement "mission essential personnel" status as of midnight Monday, 27 Jan 14. This means that unless you have mission-essential status, you should not report for duty Tuesday, 28 Jan 14, in order to keep the roads clear and safe.

If you hold mission-essential status, your supervisor will contact you by close of business today, to avoid confusion.

The 628 Medical Group will have no medical services available starting Tues., 28 Jan 14. The medical group will reopen once Joint Base Charleston has resumed normal operations. The pharmacy will have extended hours on Monday, 27 Jan 14, until 6 p.m. to allow beneficiaries to pick up any needed prescribed medications. Immunizations will also stay open until 6 p.m. Monday, and Smallpox will be administered at 4:30 p.m. since it cannot be given Tuesday morning.

Enrolled patients needing medical care during this time can call the appointment line at 843-963-6880 for assistance through the nurse advice line. The nurse advice line will be able to provide home care instructions, provide a referral for an urgent care center or direct patients to emergency room care.

Patients with scheduled medical, dental and mental health appointments during the closure will be contacted by medical group personnel to reschedule. If you have not been contacted by Friday, 31 Jan 14, to reschedule then please contact the appointment line at 843-963-6880.

The Naval Health Clinic Charleston and Weapons Station Veteran's Affairs clinics will be closed, 28 Jan 14. To contact the NHCC, call 843-794-6000.

Please see below for information regarding additional services:

- Child Development Center (Air Base/Weapons Station): Closed, 28 Jan 14.
- Emergency/First Response: Expect reduced response times for things like power outages and traffic incidents.
- Galley and Dining Facility (AB/WS): Open regular hours.
- Commissary (AB): Open regular hours.
- Commissary (WS): Open regular hours.
- Food Court (AB): Open regular hours.
- Air Base Exchange: Closed.
- Naval Exchange and food service vendors: We have not yet confirmed if the Commissary will be open but will update once we have clarity.

Base members should ensure they have adequate food in storage for the next 48 hours, since many off-base businesses may be affected as well. Mission permitting, supervisors should enable their members to get whatever supplies they might need today.

Residents should take precautions to prevent their pipes from freezing by keeping a small flow of water trickling through once freezing temperatures arrive.
