A memorial service was held for Staff Sgt. Thwanda “T.C.” Carmichael, Sunday, in the Yonkie auditorium at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina.

Carmichael was born in Paterson, New Jersey, on Dec. 10, 1964 and died March 27, 2016 at her residence in North Charleston, S.C.  315th AW leadership and Carmichael’s coworkers offered words of comfort and heartwarming tributes for everyone in attendance.

“Our hearts are full because of what she gave us in life,” said Chief Master Sgt. Reggie Godbolt, 300th Airlift Squadron loadmaster superintendent, during the memorial service. “That is what we are celebrating here today.”

Carmichael attended Denbigh High School in Newport News, Virginia, where she grew up. She attended Shaw University prior to enlisting in the U.S. Air Force Aug. 2, 1986. She left active duty in 1994. However, she returned to the military after enlisting into the U.S. Navy Reserve from December 1996 until August 1999. In 1999, Carmichael spent a year in the U.S. Army National Guard.

In March 2011, Carmichael joined the Air Force Reserve as a personalist with the 317th Airlift Squadron here.

“An echo of her life resonates in every story about Staff Sgt. Carmichael we hear,” said Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Ronald Apollo, a 315th Airlift Wing chaplain. “She had a very big heart.”
