  • A High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle was tied down with both the existing tiedowns and new synthetic tiedowns to conduct a side by side demonstration during an operational evaluation on Joint Base Charleston, Nov. 28 and 29. The evaluation was a culmination of an Air Force Research Labs, Advanced Power Technology Office, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, initiative to reduce aircraft weight by almost 1,000 pounds for better fuel efficiency.

    An operational evaluation of new synthetic tie downs and winch cables for the C-17 Globemaster III took place here in November 2016. Tie downs are ropes, cords, straps or chains that secure items during airlift operations; winch cables help adjust the tension on tie downs, securing the load.

    Bending the Cost Curve, one of the 13 Make Every Dollar Count cost initiatives launched by the Air Force, includes a growing and evolving set of more than 20 acquisition reform activities. These activities are focused on finding ways the Air Force can be more effective at how it spends money to get better capabilities to the warfighter faster.
