Col. Brett A. Newman assumed command of the 315th Maintenance Group at the Joint Base Charleston theater Sunday.

Newman comes to Charleston after serving as the commander of 419th MXG at Hill Air Force Base, Utah.

The colonel earned his commission through the Air Force ROTC program upon graduation from Middle Tennessee State University in 1987. He has served as a maintenance group commander, commanded a maintenance flight, two maintenance squadrons, a logistics squadron, and served as a Minuteman II ICBM combat crew flight commander. He served as an aircraft maintenance officer since 2003 with two overseas contingency operations tours in support of OPERATIONS IRAQI FREEDOM and ENDURING FREEDOM. Colonel Newman is a winner of the Lt. Gen. Leo Marquez Award for field grade manager while stationed at Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, N.Y.

315 MXG works side by side with the 437 MXG to provide total maintenance support for 40 assigned C-17 aircraft and support equipment valued at nearly $9 billion.

In his new position here, Newman is responsible for ensuring that this capability is sustained in support of Team Charleston's global mission.

The group oversees the training and readiness of over 350 Reservists assigned to three diverse units; the Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, the Maintenance Squadron, and the Maintenance Operations Flight here.

The previous MXG commander, Col. Walter Thomas, retired late last year.
