The wing continued to play a vital role in major contingencies and humanitarian relief efforts, deploying members in support of Operations FREEDOM SENTINEL and INHERENT RESOLVE, hurricane relief, humanitarian missions, and exercises. The wing participated in 12 counter drug missions and 11 humanitarian missions worldwide. 2016

On March 25, 2016 President Obama visited Havana, Cuba, marking the first time since 1928 a sitting U.S. president has visited the communist country. Joint Base Charleston played a pivotal role supporting logistics for this historic mission. Twenty Eight C-17 Globemaster III sorties from Joint Base Charleston were tasked with supporting the Phoenix BANNER mission to Cuba. Reservists from the 315th Airlift Wing took the lead in a related medical mission and remained ready in case they were needed along with a crew from the 16th Airlift Squadron, while the President was on the island nation.

From May 25-26, 2016, the 315th Airlift Wing participated in the largest formation takeoff and airdrop of the year in support of Fort Bragg’s All American Week. The 315th provided two airdrop crews for the formation of 12 aircraft that took off from Pope Army Air Field, N.C.
