Spouses from Team Charleston are holding an on-base cookie drive Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009 with the purpose of sending cookies to deployed troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Military spouses will be on-hand from 8 a.m. - noon at the Passenger Terminal located on Charleston Air Force Base.

"The cookie drive is a group effort organized by Charleston spouses who want to give something back and say thank you to the service men and women who make sacrifices throughout the year to keep Americans safe and protect our freedoms," said Janet Chapman, spouse of Colonel Steven Chapman, 315th Airlift wing commander. "Many of the spouses like me have had their loved one TDY or deployed over the holidays. You miss your spouse while they are gone, but during the holidays, the separation seems more evident. Helping to organize the cookie drive is one way I can show my appreciation for the sacrifices the military members make. I have a deep respect and admiration for all our airmen, sailors, marines, soldiers and coast guard members. If we can bring a little of home to one military member away from their family and show our gratitude we have been successful."

The spouses are also working with the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce today in order to round up as many cookies as possible. Local citizens are being encouraged to take part in the cookie drive by dropping off cookies at the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.

"If you would like to participate, just bring your cookies here on Monday," said M. Graham Drayton Jr., manager of public policy and regional advancement for the COC. "They can be homemade or store bought. If you make the cookies, there is no special packaging required. A Zip Lock bag is fine."

Drop-off times and locations are as follows:
  • Off-Base, Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce: Dec. 7, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. 2750 Speissegger Dr., Charleston, SC
  • On-Base, Passenger Terminal: Dec. 8, 8 a.m. - noon
