So often when Independence Day comes about we tend to look at the past
heroes of freedom. Today I urge you to take a look at yourself as you are a reflection of the patriots who have gone before us. The on-going accomplishments of the members of this wing and Team Charleston are a witness to a heritage of fellow citizens who have answered the call to duty and service throughout the 230 years of American history.

A few months ago, during a clergy day tour, one of our chief master sergeants described our wing mission as one of “delivering freedom.” I urge you to take a look at yourself and affirm the fact of how you are integral to this mission of delivering freedom.

Thirty-two years ago, as a young Marine, I remember how much we appreciated and depended on air mobility. My base was near an Air Force base, and we witnessed the daily flow of aircraft on various missions.

The sight of those American planes inspired us. Those aircraft were our lifeline for supplies, support and security and would one day deliver us back home to the U.S.A. Actually it was the fellow Americans flying and supporting those planes, our fellow patriots, we depended on.

Freedom is delivered in so many ways by you, the members of this wing – from supplies and relief to deployments and evacuations; from support and security to equipment and personnel; and from safety and maintenance to homecomings. Each and every one of you has gifts, talents and knowledge in this life-giving process of delivering freedom. Your efforts and sacrifices are witness to your being one of the patriots of today.

As your wing chaplain, I urge you to reflect upon the role you serve in this War on Terror. Your part in serving offers hope for a just, peaceful and free world.

May you have a safe July 4 celebration whether you find yourself deployed on duty or at home with family and friends. Wherever you celebrate do so affirming you and your team, crew or section have been gifted to share your lives as today’s patriots in the service of delivering freedom throughout the globe.

May we celebrate our American Independence with confidence in our mission for today and the future.
