315th Airman named 2013 Reserve Deputy Sheriff of the Year

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. --  Master Sgt. Jerry Henning, 315th Security Forces Squadron here, was named the 2013 Reserve Deputy Sherriff of the Year for Charleston County.

Henning logged more than 330 hours in 2013 as a reservist for the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, which far exceeded the minimum requisite for a Reserve deputy.

According to Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon Jr., Henning's commitment to service and excellence is what sets him apart.

"Henning always maintains his reserve status with excellence and continues to go above and beyond as a reservist for the Charleston County Sheriff's Office," said Cannon. "His dedication to the mission of the Charleston County Sheriff's Office has consumed a significant amount of personal time and effort and has not gone unnoticed."

Henning has worked with Charleston County for 21 years. He has been a reserve deputy sheriff for the past 14 years, and he spent seven years working full time with Charleston County before he left his position there to become an air reserve technician with the 315th Airlift Wing here.

As an air observer since 1997, Henning monitors ground activity during flight. He keeps pilots informed, and he coordinates operations with field officers as needed. His volunteer work helps support a variety of functions, which includes pursuit and support operations, specialized unit support and static displays.

Henning is also on call-out status when not performing his assigned shift, which provides 24/7 coverage as needed. He can go anywhere in South Carolina or neighboring states, but he primarily covers the Tri-County area and the South Carolina east coast line.

Even with all of his hard work and dedication as a reserve deputy, Henning was surprised when he learned that he was chosen as the 2013 Reserve Deputy Sherriff of the Year.

"It totally caught me off guard when I was notified," he said. "I am honored to have been chosen out of such an outstanding career field and highly experienced law enforcement community."
