JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Hurricane Joaquin, currently a Category 3 Storm, is expected to pass well east of our area, with a small chance of Tropical Storm force winds in the next five days.
However, it’s important to note that there is low confidence in the current forecast until the storm turns to the north.
As of today, October 1st, there are several weather concerns that Joint Base Charleston Personnel and their families should be aware of, which are listed below. The bottom-line is that everyone needs to be prepared for widespread road closures this weekend due to flooding. Please see the Flood Tips and Weather Concerns below to help keep you and your family safe during and after heavy rainfall.
Weather Concerns
- There is a flash flood watch through Saturday at 2000.
- There is an expected 10"+ of rain between now and Sunday, which is projected to start moderately tomorrow with the heaviest rain on Saturday from midday through the night.
- We are already saturated and receiving rainfall amounts triple the October average of 3.3" in the next few days.
- We have an enhanced risk of moderate to possibly major salt water flooding two hours before and after high tides in and near low-lying areas. (High tides over the next few days are around midnight and midday.)
Flooding Tips: During and After Heavy Rainfall
- Stay tuned to radio or television for updates.
- Be aware that flash flooding can occur. If there is any possibility of a flash flood, move immediately to higher ground. Do not wait for instructions to move.
- Do not ever drive or walk through moving water – as little as 18 inches can sweep your car away and 6 inches can sweep you off your feet.
- Be aware of streams, drainage channels, canyons and other areas known to flood suddenly.
- If your home is prone to flooding, move your furnace, electrical panel and water heater to higher floors.
- Construct water barriers to stop floodwater from entering your home or building.
- Be careful in areas where floodwaters have receded.
- Watch for downed electrical lines and weakened roads and bridges.
- Stay out of flooded buildings and use caution when entering damaged structures. Their foundations may have weakened.
