Reservists bring new shoes, smiles to Dominican Republic children Published July 1, 2016 By Michael Dukes 315th Airlift Wing Public Affairs JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Reservists at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina can rest assured that their participation in humanitarian efforts is truly appreciated and occasionally they get feedback from those on the receiving end. Most recently this feedback came from U.S. Southern Command after another Denton cargo delivery to the Dominican Republic by members of the 317th Airlift Squadron on June 12. A bulk of the cargo on this delivery was pallets containing 600 pairs of Croc-style shoes donated by an organization called Shuzz Fund. The recipients were for school-age children in underserved communities in the Province of Maria Trinidad Sanchez, Dominican Republic, in conjunction with USSOUTHCOM’s New Horizons Training Exercise Dominican Republic 2016. “Thanks for getting the 16 pallets to the Dominican Republic the weekend of 12 June,” said Tatiana Escudero, of U.S. Southern Command’s J9 Partnering Directorate. “We can't thank you enough for assisting the J9 in moving donations to DR in a speedy fashion. Again, thank you! We couldn't have done it without your assistance.” The Denton Program is a Department of Defense transportation program that moves humanitarian cargo, donated by U.S. based Non-Governmental Organizations to developing nations to ease human suffering. The approved cargo is transported by DOD land, air or sea assets on a space-available basis. The program is authorized by statute (10 U.S. Code 402) and is managed by the U.S. Department of State and DOD. The actual transportation portion of this program is contractually managed by USTRANSCOM utilizing a contractor operating out of Joint Base Charleston, SC. New Horizons is an annual training exercise for U.S. military civil engineers and medical professionals that prepares participants to deploy, conduct joint operations with partner nations, and redeploy back to the United States.
